Are you ready for an uncertain future?

I wish each and every one of you and your loved one’s wellness and safety during this time.

These are unprecedented times and the first time ever in my life I am witnessing a lot of firsts including seeing the world practically coming to a halt. While there is uncertainty, sadness and fear all around still one can enjoy some positives emerging from this pandemic like the healing of the earth, spending time with family, taking care of your health, increased focus on personal and public hygiene, following your passion etc.

I am currently coaching a few senior HR leaders and our conversations have evolved during the last 30-45 days. It started with their challenge to organise Sanitisers and Masks for all employees, to sanitise the facility, to organise guest houses/hotels for critical staff, to enabling Work from Home (WFH) by arranging laptops, broadband connections etc., to How can we reduce our cost?

The biggest worry for the organisations is how to sustain the current level of cost when the businesses are either shut or operating at a sub-optimal level. The future looks bleak at least for the next 6-12 months (depending upon the industry type).

While the companies want to protect their staff but that may not be practical if businesses have to survive. Unfortunately, the cost reduction options being considered will have a direct impact on the employees. Based on my discussions with the industry leaders various options being discussed are as follows (not a comprehensive list):

  • Reducing staff strength
  • No increments/bonus/promotions
  • Salary reduction across the board
  • Permanent WFH with a changed/reduced salary
  • More Contractors fewer Employees
  • Part-time employees
  • Shutting down a part of business
  • Automation of production lines
  • Enhanced investment in AI solutions for the service industry

I am sure most of you would have never imagined that this can happen to you before this crisis. However, this is the reality now and you have to prepare yourself to face an uncertain future. The challenge is more severe for senior and middle-level executives.

I am experiencing an increased number of requests from leaders across industries to support them to prepare for this unexpected and unprecedented catastrophe in their careers. Some of them have just been told that their services are no longer required and they are being sent on garden leave. There are others who are anticipating some bad news soon – something they never dreamt off before the pandemic.

Most people are struggling with the following questions:

  • What are my options?
  • How should I prepare for a new job/role?
  • Where can I access relevant job openings?
  • Who can help me find another job?
  • How should I upskill myself to remain relevant?
  • Should I join the same industry or try something new?
  • Can I become an entrepreneur or a consultant?
  • Can I change my line?
  • Should I do some certification/course?
  • How can I leverage my network?
  • Should I follow my passion?

I am sure some of you are also experiencing this dilemma.

How are you planning to handle this dilemma?

Do you have a plan to manage an uncertain future?

If not, please reach out to someone who can help you find answers. Let go off your inhibitions to share your fears with someone whom you can trust. It is a good time to engage a professional Coach to discover yourself, find out what will work best for you and be prepared to handle the uncertain future.

Remember there is an opportunity resulting from every challenge in life. What’s the new opportunity for you?
